More funding for local government areas after bushfires

Ballarat and Golden Plains councils will receive bushfire recovery funding from a $17 million fund through The National Bushfire Recovery Agency.

The City of Ballarat Council will receive $225,000 and Golden Plains Shire will receive $200,000 in the latest round of funding.

Liberal Senator for Victoria Sarah Henderson said, β€œThe extra funding will empower bushfire-affected regions to lead a local recovery.

β€œPeople in bushfire-affected regions know what matters most to them – it’s only fair they should decide how the money is spent.”

β€œThe fires have hit hard from community to community but we’re a tough bunch in Victoria and we know what’s needed to recover.

β€œThe Federal Government has agreed to make the funding available.

β€œThe National Bushfire Recovery Agency made an independent decision of where the money should be allocated.

β€œThe agency looked at a range of factors including population, disaster recovery payments already received, the area burnt and socio-economic factors of the council area,” said Senator Henderson.

All councils have been informed of their funding which will range from $200,000 to $416,667.

Local Government Areas can use the funding for rebuilding council infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and community facilities; re-fencing and hosting activities that bring communities together.
