Labor’s school funding war continues

Labor’s announcement today of new school funding deals for Victoria and South Australia raises more questions than answers.

With New South Wales and Queensland left out in the cold, it is clear Labor’s school funding war continues with more than half of Australia’s government schools.

The government has kept the details a secret which suggests it has done favourable deals with Victoria and South Australia at the expense of government schools in Tasmania, Western Australia and the ACT.

It certainly appears Education Minister Jason Clare, who failed to conclude an agreement with four states by the 31 December 2024 deadline, has been sidelined by his Prime Minister.

Mr Clare failed to get the job done and more than 1.3 million students who attend government schools in New South Wales and Queensland continue to pay the price

The Albanese government has also failed to mandate the delivery of explicit instruction in every classroom which is crucial to raising student achievement.

Given one in three children is failing NAPLAN, this is a real missed opportunity to drive the school reforms every young Australian deserves to reach his or her best potential.

The Coalition is determined to get back to basics by focusing on evidence-based teaching which prioritises reading, writing, maths and science.

Under the previous Coalition government, annual school funding nearly doubled – from $13 billion in 2013 to $25.3 billion in 2022.
