I was delighted to join in the formal sod turning of the $12.75 million Surf Coast Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium at Torquay to which our government is providing $5 million.
This investment is proudly being contributed by the Morrison Liberal Government as part of the $841 million Building Better Regions Fund.
Building a better region aptly describes this project.
The extraordinary growth of the Surf Coast has driven the need for this facility which will be home to basketball, netball, futsal, badminton and volleyball competitions.
Growth in these sports alone is expected to double in the coming years.
The stadium will include three multi-purpose indoor sports courts at the Surf Coast Secondary College – to be co-used by the college, local sporting clubs and other groups for education and community events.
The school-based location provides the best possible access for local students as well as the community at large.
This will be an absolutely wonderful facility for so many Surf Coast families. I was very proud to advocate so hard for this much needed sporting infrastructure.
The stadium will also deliver a canteen, meeting, first aid and staff rooms, plus fixed tiered and temporary seating for great viewing of sporting matches. A carpark, a pedestrian crossing on Wadawurrung Way and landscaping are part of the project.
Surf Coast Shire is investing $4.75 million in the facility and the Victorian Government is providing $3 million.
The Australian Government is investing a record $100 million over 10 years from 2019-20 in a rolling infrastructure plan to help manage Australia’s growing population, increasing freight challenge and the critical effort of improved transport systems that get people home sooner and safer.
Regions such as the Surf Coast play a pivotal role in the growth of regional Australia – and projects such this – symbolise the Government’s commitment to fostering and supporting stronger regional communities.
Job creation is critical to this. I am delighted to say that the Surf Coast Multi-Purpose Indoor Sports Stadium will involve 37 construction jobs and create another 25 ongoing jobs.
