Joint media release: Michael McCormack, Deputy Prime Minister and Sarah Henderson Senator for Victoria
People across Australia are celebrating the festival of lights, Deepavali, a tradition symbolising the spiritual victory of good over evil.
Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, David Coleman, said the celebration is an important event for Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities in Australia.
“Deepavali festivities celebrate hope, renewed friendships and promoting peace and harmony, messages that all Australians can relate to and appreciate,” Minister Coleman said.
“Vibrant celebrations like Deepavali are part of what makes Australia the most successful multicultural society in the world.
“Deepavali is a great example of how our diversity has enriched our society. Like many other festivals, it has become very much a part of the rich landscape of many Australian communities,” Minister Coleman said.
Senator Sarah Henderson said communities throughout Victoria will share the meaning of Deepavali with cultural events featuring art, stories and live performances and of course, lights.
“Deepavali is a time for family, friends and communities to come together to celebrate hope and friendship and share special food with family and friends,”
“I send my best wishes to all Australians celebrating Deepavali,” Senator Henderson said.
