Senator for Victoria Sarah Henderson has called on members of the local community to show their support for Australia Day.
“Australia Day is a day for all Australians, and it should be celebrated,” Senator Henderson said.
“Sadly, a day that should unite Australians as we celebrate our achievements and shared values is being undermined by the Albanese Labor Government.
“Little by little, Prime Minister Albanese and his government are making Australia Day less special. They have given the green light to councils to cancel citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day and the Prime Minister’s hand-picked ambassador to the United Kingdom has cancelled a long-running Australia Day charity event.
“The City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire and Golden Plains Shire are among councils which have cancelled citizenship ceremonies on 26 January.
“This divisive activism has no place in our community. What message does this send to new citizens and our children when the federal government is too embarrassed to celebrate Australia Day?
“We are a great nation, and we should celebrate. If Australians don’t fight hard to stand up for Australia Day, the Labor government will abolish it.
“That is why I am calling on all regional Victorians, who are proud to be called Australian, to sign the petition in support of our national day and send a message to Labor that we want a nation that is united not divided,” Senator Henderson said.
