Statement to The Australian, 25 July 2024
In the wake of the Albanese Government’s refusal to combat the alarming rise in antisemitism on university campuses, I welcome any initiative which improves the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.
Since 7 October, the University of Sydney has profoundly failed Jewish Australians.
The university’s failure to uphold its rules against intimidation, discrimination and racial vilification represents a shocking abrogation of responsibility.
Despite being on notice about the infiltration of extremist groups such as Hizb ut-Tahrir, the University of Sydney over many weeks took no action.
This has been a very dark period for the standing of our universities.
That is why Labor must agree to the Coalition’s judicial inquiry into antisemitism at Australian universities.
