Local road maintenance across 18 projects in the Corangamite electorate will receive a $2.95 million boost thanks to funding under the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Program.
Liberal Senator for Victoria, and Patron Senator for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson, said the Australian Government would deliver over $139.6 million to 310 local government authorities nationwide for safer and better-maintained roads.
“The Roads to Recovery funding in Corangamite will allow councils across the area to progress a number of high-priority projects, using local knowledge to deliver the best local roads,” Senator Henderson said.
These projects will include the following:
Borough of Queenscliffe
Hesse Street, Queenscliffe Total project cost $1.36M, $152,715 from RTR
To reduce flooding, increase parking, improve lighting and pedestrian safety. Works will widen part of the street to enable new kerbing, channelling and drainage, 25 new parking bays, two
wombat crossings and upgrading street lighting.
Colac Otway Shire
Weering School Road Total project cost of $87,371 from RTR
The project will repair the damaged road surface and poor drainage. Works will seal the road, define drainage and restore signage, line markings and signposts.
Drapers Road Total project cost of $133,589 from RTR
The project will repair damaged road and install kerb and channelling.
Conns Lane, Birregurra Total project cost of $655,374 from RTR
The project will repair 2094 metre section of the road due to wear and tear. All road signage, marking and guideposts will be restored.
Collins Road, Irrewarra Total project costs of $155,609 from RTR
The project will repair 317 metres of the road due to wear and tear. All road, signage, marking and guideposts will be restored.
Forrest Street, near Colanda Rd Total project cost $400,000 from RTR
The project will repair 620 metres of damaged road due to use by heavy timber trucks. The funding will enable an improved better design and repair or the road surface.
Strachan Street, near Barry St Total project cost of $271,000 from RTR
The project will widen the road and improve access.
Surf Coast Shire
Messmate Road, Torquay Total project cost of $900,000, $600,000 from RTR
The project will seal a short section of gravel road between South Beach Road and Coombes
Street used by heavy vehicles accessing the Council Depot.
Horseshoe Bend Road, Torquay Total project cost of $900,000, $88,000 from RTR
The road is already being widened at Thompsons Creek between Fishers Road and McCanns
Road. This project will create a longer culvert and new guardrail.
Duffields Road, Torquay Total project cost of $240,000, $220,000 from RTR
This project will remove and replace the roundabout at the intersection of Duffields Road and
Oceans Views Crescent. Median islands will be replaced with removable islands to cater for
cycling events.
Gundry’s Road, Bellbrae Total project cost of $113,060 from RTR
There are road safety concerns on tight bends of this rural gravel road. This project will seal
the section of road between Forest Road and Eagle Point Road.
Gum Flats Road, Anglesea Total project cost of $13,500 from RTR
This project will allow for grading maintenance.
Tanners Road, Gherang Total project cost of $13,500 from RTR
This project will allow for grading maintenance.
Benwerrin Mount Sabine Road, Lorne Total project cost of $13,500 from RTR
This project will allow for grading maintenance.
Elkington Road, Anglesea Total project cost of $8,000 from RTR
This project will allow for grading maintenance.
Erskine Falls Road, Lorne Total project cost of $8,000 from RTR
This project will allow for grading maintenance.
Bambra Aireys Inlet Road, Aireys Inlet Total project cost of $8,500 from RTR
This project will allow for grading maintenance.
Ghazeepore Road, Torquay Total project cost of $8,500 from RTR
This project will allow for grading maintenance.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Australian Government has committed an additional $100 million per year to the Roads to Recovery Program from 2019–20, as part of the Local and State Government Road Safety Package announced in the 2019–20 Budget.
“From 2013–14 to 2023–24, the Government will provide $6.2 billion under the Roads to Recovery Program, with an ongoing commitment of $500 million each year following,” Mr McCormack said.
Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Andrew Gee said the Australian Government was committed to getting Australians home sooner and safer, no matter where they lived.
“Our Roads to Recovery investments will deliver safer roads in local government areas throughout the country,” Mr Gee said.
The Australian Government supports local governments to provide vital infrastructure and services through Financial Assistance Grants, and the Bridges Renewal, Black Spot, Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity and Roads to Recovery programs.
