Patients in Geelong and the wider western Victoria region will be able to undertake cancer treatment closer to home with the opening today of the new ICON Cancer Centre.
Federal Regional Health Minister, Mark Coulton said the new centre in Geelong would be welcome news to patients in the Geelong and surrounding region who required radiation oncology as part of their cancer treatment.
In Geelong for the opening, Minister Coulton said the new centre features $3.9 million worth of radiotherapy equipment funded by the Liberal and Nationals Government.
“By having access to this new life-saving equipment, fewer patients from western Victoria will have to travel to Melbourne for treatment, and they will be able to recover closer to their friends and family, which is so important,” he said.
“The Government will also pay Medicare benefits for cancer treatment at the centre, including radiotherapy services, meaning patients will be able to access this life-saving equipment and expertise through Medicare.
“As Minister for Regional Health, I know how important it is for Australians living and working in regional areas to be able to access these vital services. The Government is committed to improving the lives of Australians affected by cancer.”
Minister Coulton was joined at the opening by Senator for Victoria, Sarah Henderson.
“The Coalition Government’s investment in this new linear accelerator enables ICON Cancer Centre in Geelong to treat local cancer patients needing radiotherapy,” Senator Henderson said.
Tragically, more than 79,000 men and more than 68,000 women are estimated to be diagnosed with cancer this year. About 48 per cent of people diagnosed with cancer require external beam radiotherapy during their treatment, with patients now able to have more treatment in Geelong.
