I am delighted that our Government has led the way in delivering and finalising a $10 billion agreement to build the Melbourne Airport Rail Link (MARL) which will connect to Sunshine and through to Geelong.
The deal was formally announced by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews today.
The Sunshine terminal is a critical connection for regional commuters including Corangamite residents travelling to Melbourne.
While the Government’s $5 billion contribution has been matched by the state, the focus now needs to be on fast rail and fixing the Regional Rail Link.
Our Government is delivering $254 million for the Warrnambool to Geelong rail line, including $150 million to duplicating the track between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, as well as upgrading platforms at Waurn Ponds, Marshall and South Geelong. I have been advocating for the Geelong duplication project for the past four years. Yet during this time, Labor sat on its hands delivering only $20 million for local rail upgrades.
While Labor has now made an election commitment of $147 million for the Geelong duplication project, this represents only 20 per cent of the total cost of the project.
The state government has been operating at glacial speed in rolling out this project and developing a fast rail plan. I urge the state to urgently fast track these projects so local residents get the rail service they so deserve.
