Independent inquiry must urgently investigate North Geelong boom gate failure

The Victorian Government must conduct an urgent independent inquiry into the cause of the boom gate failure in North Geelong on 8 January 2019.

It is alarming that a Corio resident, Caroline Bull, came so close to being hit by a freight train which careered through a level crossing where boom gates failed to activate.

As reported by the Geelong Advertiser on 19 January 2019, Ms Bull says that she came within just 1 metre of the train and was very close to being hit and killed.

This is frankly a frightening situation.

The inquiry must also investigate the basis on which the Victorian Government claimed that no vehicles were in the vicinity at the time of this dramatic incident.  This is clearly untrue.

Premier Daniel Andrews owes the people of Geelong and Corangamite a full explanation.

Given State Labor’s refusal to be transparent about how this terrible incident occurred, an independent inquiry must be announced immediately.

Arranging for attendants to be stationed at three level crossings in the area is no solution.

Daniel Andrews must provide local residents with the confidence that these level crossings are safe.
