Opening of the 45th Parliament

Today is the opening of the 45th Parliament.

This morning, after attending a Welcome to Country ceremony, it was an honour to be sworn in for my second term as the Federal Member for Corangamite and as a member of the Turnbull Government.

I congratulate the Member for Casey, Tony Smith, on his unanimous election as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

This afternoon, the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove will address both Houses of Parliament.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, our government will be working hard during this 45th Parliament to deliver on its economic plan for jobs and a stronger economy.   Budget repair is of fundamental importance.

This week, the Turnbull Government will quickly get down to business, introducing a wide range of new bills.  They include the Budget Savings (Omnibus) Bill to deliver more than $6 billion in budget savings to which Labor agreed during the election campaign; legislation to bring back the Australian Building and Construction Commission to tackle lawlessness on Australian building sites and critically important amendments to the Fair Work Act to protect the rights of CFA volunteers.

I am very proud of the government’s determination to support our wonderful CFA volunteers from Labor’s militant union takeover of the CFA.

We will also move quickly to deliver a company tax cut to 27.5% for small businesses with a turnover of up to $10m and a tax discount increase for unincorporated small businesses.  This investment in small business, the engine room of our economy, will help create more jobs, build a stronger economy and boost business confidence.

I am honoured and humbled to be re-elected the Federal Member for Corangamite.  I thank the people of Corangamite for placing their trust in me which I take very seriously.  Over the next three years, I look forward to delivering on our local election commitments and serving the Corangamite electorate with determination, integrity and compassion.
