Coalition delivers major solar boost to Surf Coast Shire

Local organisations in the Surf Coast Shire are the latest beneficiary of the Coalition’s commitment to boost renewable energy in our communities with seven new solar projects soon to be rolled out.

Minister for the Environment Greg Hunt and Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson, today announced that seven community groups will share more than $93,000 to install solar photovoltaic panel systems on their buildings.

“These grants are part of the Coalition’s commitment to install renewable energy systems on buildings that are used by community organisations.”

“Together these seven projects will generate around 65 kilowatts (Kw) of clean, renewable energy, which will help these hard-working community organisations lower their electricity bills. It is also a great result for the environment,” Ms Henderson said.

A range of community organisations in Corangamite will benefit – Modewarre Country Fire Authority, Gnarwarre Men’s Shed, Drol Kar Buddhist Centre, Anglesea & District Men’s Shed, Victorian YMCA Anglesea Recreation Camp, Surf Coast Toy Library and the Connewarre Country Fire Authority.

“These seven groups play an important role in our community and it’s great to be able to assist them with the uptake of renewable energy,” Ms Henderson said.

“Installing solar photovoltaic panel systems on the buildings used by these groups will deliver benefits to the community and the environment by saving energy, reducing emissions and lowering electricity bills.”

Funding for these projects is part of the Coalition’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is an opportunity for communities to engage with clean renewable energy.

Australia already has the highest per capita rate of household solar in the world, with more than 2.4 million households, small businesses and community organisations installing rooftop solar and solar hot water systems.

These grants are another way that we’re taking practical action to tackle climate change, without Bill Shorten’s job-destroying electricity tax.
