Labor, Unclog the West Gate and Build a Western Link

The message is clear – Labor must unclog the West Gate, deliver 3000 jobs and build a western link.

With the Federal Government committing $1.5 billion to help construct a western link, it is critical that the Victorian Government commits to this project in next week’s Victorian Budget.

Much of the $1.5 billion already paid to the Victorian Government was specifically allocated to fast track the design and planning for a western road link, as part of the East West Link project.

As the previous state government confirmed in a statement on 3 November 2014, consultants GHD entered into a contract to provide technical, planning and advisory services for the western section of the East West Link. So what has happened to this contract since the Andrews Government came to power?

There has also been no further advice on the expression of interest progress of Labor’s flawed West Gate Distributor project which would do nothing to solve the terrible traffic congestion on the West Gate Freeway and Bridge. So again I say to Daniel Andrews, has this project been put on ice?

In tearing up Stage 1 (the eastern section) of the East West Link contract, State and Federal Labor have already destroyed thousands of jobs.

Job creation is so important for the people of Corangamite.

A western road link would deliver a second river crossing and an alternative to the congested West Gate Bridge.

It would also deliver an estimated 3000 construction jobs.

Once completed, it will save Geelong peak hour commuters some 3 hours a week in travel time as well as improve road safety and provide direct access to the Port of Melbourne for transport and logistics companies.

It would help bring new businesses, more jobs and families to our region.

Today I met with executive members of the Committee for Geelong and called on the committee to strongly back a western link.

Enough is enough.

Labor must unclog the West Gate, deliver 3000 jobs and build a western link.
