Today I joined a local protest meeting in Birregurra as part of the push to keep temporary mobile phone reception towers in Corangamite for the summer.
The Birregurra and Gellibrand communities have a right to feel hard done by.
Telstra boosted its mobile phone reception for visiting cyclists, but plans to remove the towers after the ride.
It is unfair to give local communities a glimmer of hope only to take it away so quickly, leaving them in mobile phone black spots once again.
Mobile phone coverage in these townships is inadequate and public safety and the local economy would benefit from better reception.
I have continuously campaigned for better mobile phone coverage and I am happy to take this fight to Telstra on behalf of these communities.
I have written to Telstra to request that the towers in Birregurra and Gellibrand remain in place during the summer.
I am extremely proud of our $100 million commitment to fix mobile phone black spots, which reflects a genuine care for country people. Applications for this fund open next year.
I will continue to make the case for funding to fix these black spots in Corangamite.
