The Morrison Government has delivered $254 million for the Warrnambool to Geelong rail line including $150 million to duplicating the track between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, as well as upgrading platforms at Waurn Ponds, Marshall and South Geelong.
The state Liberals have committed to high-speed rail for the people of Corangamite and the Geelong region. Their bold vision will transform regional rail services in Victoria with a 32-minute service between Geelong and Melbourne. This is a game-changing investment. That’s the sort of commitment we want and we deserve.
Under a Liberal state government, we’re also getting metro rail. This includes a service from Colac directly to Bannockburn and a reopening of the line between Waurn Ponds and Werribee. A much needed service after the Labor Party shut down the Werribee line.
Apart from an initial tranche of only $20 million, Labor has delivered no budgeted funding to upgrade our rail services which is an absolute disgrace.
To make matters worse, State Labor has done nothing to fix the Regional Rail Link which has proved to be a total disaster for Geelong and Corangamite commuters in peak hour.
The Geelong to Melbourne rail line is the busiest regional rail service in Victoria. Trips on the Geelong, Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool lines have increased from 2.6 million in 2006-07 to 7.6 million in 2016-17, as the Geelong Advertiser reported (GA 20/4/18).
