Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Armistice

I was delighted to unveil new commemorative seating by the Torquay RSL Sub-Branch at Fishermans Beach in Torquay today.

Torquay RSL received $4,500 of Federal Government funding to complete the project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of the First World War.

Torquay and District Historical Society also received $3,000 to support the publication of a booklet outlining details of local service men and women from the area who served in the First World War. When complete, the booklet will be distributed free of charge to local schools, probus clubs and RSL’s.

I congratulate Torquay RSL and Torquay and District Historical Society for its work in commemorating the Centenary of Armistice. On 11 November this year, all Australians will join together to pay tribute to the brave men and women who fought for our freedom.

These projects will create a lasting legacy of remembrance in the Corangamite community.

Under the Armistice Centenary Grants Program, every electorate in Australia will receive up to $50,000 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of the First World War.

Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service (VVCS) can be reached 24 hours a day across Australia for support and free and confidential counselling. Phone 1800 011 046 (international: +61 8 8241 4546). VVCS is a
