Speech: State Labor must fund Oberon High School

Yesterday in Parliament I called on Victorian Labor to fund Oberon High School.

Too many schools in Corangamite were left high and dry by Labor in its last state budget.  After campaigning for vital infrastructure funding for Bellbrae Primary School, South Barwon MP Andrew Katos announced $8m in funding and shamed Labor into also committing to more funding for Bellbrae.

Labor has still not explained why it has failed to provide up to $10 million that is desperately required for Bellaire Primary School.  Winchelsea Primary is also waiting for much needed financial assistance with the removal of asbestos which is a cost it should not have to bear. It is unacceptable that the Oberon High School community has been treated so poorly and that the funds required to build a new school have not been provided.   I fully support the campaign that parents have instituted calling on the government to fund this school.

My speech is below:

One of the issues that we’ve been dealing with is the tendency of the opposition not to tell the truth when it comes to funding of schools and hospitals, and we’ve just heard it again in this chamber. The fact of the matter is that this government is providing billions more over 10 years for schools, and in Corangamite our funding to government schools increases from $40.1 million this year to $48.8 million in four years time and then grows to $63.1 million in 2027. That’s record and growing funding from the Turnbull government.

It was my great pleasure to visit Oberon High School in Belmont a few weeks ago, to present a flag and talk about the wonderful work that they are doing at that school. It has a wonderful spirit and ethos. It’s punching above its weight in so many respects. But it’s been badly let down by the Daniel Andrews Victorian Labor government. Despite the promise that a new school was desperately needed and the great hope that there would be funds in the budget for construction, there was absolutely nothing in the last state budget, except a very small amount for planning works. Shame on Daniel Andrews and the Victorian Labor government. Oberon High School needs to be relocated to Armstrong Creek. These funds are desperately needed. I call on the government to provide this funding.
