The Turnbull Government will commit $20 million towards the construction of Avalon’s new international terminal in the 2018 Federal Budget.
This is a wonderful investment in Victoria’s second international airport and for our region.
The new terminal will initially accommodate the arrival and departure of more than 400,000 international passengers annually.
The construction phase is estimated to provide over 30 jobs at Avalon Airport and 50 jobs off-airport. Once international flights commence, the new services are expected to generate almost 190 additional full time jobs at the airport and 170 additional jobs in Geelong and the surrounding region.
Direct international services from Avalon will benefit the tourism economy of the region, and create opportunities for a range of new exports including fresh produce, as well as acting as a catalyst to other prospective international carriers.
I am incredibly proud of our government’s support for an international airport at Avalon. This is in stark contrast to the previous Federal Labor government which, in 2008, rejected Avalon’s proposal to build an international terminal.
