I am delighted the Dereel community finally has a mobile base station.
Poor mobile communications has been a big issue in this community for a long time and I am very pleased the Turnbull government’s investment in fixing mobile blackspots, in partnership with Telstra, has delivered this new mobile base station for Dereel.
In March 2013, after the terrible Dereel bushfire, I vowed to do everything I could to support this community. After I was elected, I spoke about my fight for Dereel in my first speech.
In 2015, I was proud to announce the mobile base station would be a reality under what is now our $220m Mobile Blackspots Funding Program.
I have been a very strong local voice for the needs of towns in areas of high bushfire risk. Mobile communication is vital not just for small businesses, residents and tourists but for firefighters and other emergency service personnel.
The Dereel community has enduered a long battle to see this come to fruition. When Telstra could not meet its revised timeframe, I took this issue to the Prime Minister.
I am delighted that, at long last, Dereel has much improved mobile reception!
