Congratulations to AKD Softwoods for taking out the 2017 Innovation in Business Award at the Forestry Industry Innovation Awards 2017 Gala Dinner in Parliament House, Canberra.
This is a wonderful credit to a one of Colac’s major employers.
AKD Softwoods received its award for dedication to continuous improvement and the use of cutting edge technology.
In a first for Australia, AKD introduced continuous drying kilns in its Colac mill which increased energy efficiency by 30% and reduced water use by 20 megalitres per year.
AKD has also upgraded its Irrewarra mill with gang saw technology which saw throughput almost double, and increase overall capacity by 25%.
There are plans underway to deliver a new $30 million saw line for AKD’s Colac mill to which the Turnbull government contributed $3.5m under the Geelong Region Innovation and Employment Fund (GRIIF). This will make AKD Softwoods the most modern saw mill in Australia and improve production capacity by 50%.
The $29.5m GRIIF, which includes $15m of Commonwealth funding, has so far generated 890 new full time jobs and a total investment of over $210m across the region.
