Federal member for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson, and State member for South Barwon, Andrew Katos, are calling on the Andrews Labor Government to urgently upgrade the Barwon Heads Road.
While planning for the duplication of the road between Marshall and Warralilly is underway, this work must be fast tracked.
Ms Henderson and Mr Katos have also raised concerns about the section of the road between the Connewarre roundabout and the Barwon Heads township.
“This part of the Barwon Heads Rd, particularly just east of the roundabout, is in a terrible state and very dangerous,” Ms Henderson said. “This stretch of road is flood prone and is rapidly deteriorating”.
“As a parent who lives in Barwon Heads, I am incredibly concerned about the risks of travelling along this road. In a recent electorate wide community survey I conducted, the state of the Barwon Heads road came in as the number one local issue of concern”.
“On Monday night I attended a meeting of the Barwon Heads Association where many local residents raised concerns about the state of the road” said Ms Henderson.
“Victorian Roads Minister Luke Donnellan has indicated that this section of the road will be subject to only routine maintenance and frankly this is not good enough”, Mr Katos said.
“VicRoads has not been provided with the funding to do anything more than patch up jobs, and that’s simply unacceptable”.
Ms Henderson and Mr Katos have also called on the state government to make an urgent application for Natural Disaster Recovery and Relief Assistance (NDRRA) funding which will trigger the provision of Commonwealth funding.
NDRRA funding was provided for floods which occurred last month. Given the amount of people impacted by these flash floods, I hope that the state government can quickly move to apply for more funding,” Mr Katos said.
