I am thrilled to have officially opened the new Shell Lorne Service Station. The official opening was a wonderful community celebration.
Congratulations to Riordan Fuels for working so hard to ensure fuel will continue to flow in Lorne. Riordan Fuels as lessee, in conjunction with the landlord, have invested in upgraded and new fuel tanks. This will prevent any further fuel contamination which was occurring when BP Australia ran the petrol station.
It is terrific that Viva Energy has also come on board to supply the fuel from its Geelong refinery.
Since January of this year, I have joined with the Lorne community to fight BP Australia’s terrible decision to close the Lorne petrol station.
For local residents, traders and for the five million tourists who visit the Great Ocean Road, BP’s decision to abandon Lorne was untenable.
As Corangamite’s strong local voice, I spoke out in Parliament, raised BP’s conduct with the Assistant Treasurer and triggered an investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
It was only after this community fight that BP extended its closing date from February to May 2016 and then to August 2016.
It has been a long fought campaign and I am so proud to have represented the people of Lorne on such an important issue. This is a wonderful community achievement.
