Today in Bannockburn, Sarah Henderson MP, Federal Member for Corangamite and the Federal Minister for Employment, Michaelia Cash will join firefighters in a rally against Labor’s union takeover of CFA volunteers.
“In one of the most fire prone areas in the state, Corangamite CFA volunteers are the heart and soul of so many communities. The Corangamite community cannot afford to lose any of our wonderful CFA volunteers,” Sarah Henderson, Federal Member for Corangamite said.
“Only the Turnbull Government will protect the CFA.”
“Bill Shorten and Labor’s Corangamite candidate’s claim that this is a “state issue” have been completely discredited. This issue has arisen because Labor is attempting to misuse a federal law – the Fair Work Act – to impose a union takeover of the CFA. The same Act clearly gives the federal Government a range of powers to intervene in this matter.”
“Bill Shorten is at the centre of this issue and cannot escape his responsibility. Victoria’s 60,000 CFA volunteers are the human cost of Bill Shorten’s deal with the UFU. Bill Shorten is now turning his back on them by avoiding Victorian electorates. Only the Coalition will protect and respect the CFA. Bill Shorten and Labor will destroy it,” Ms Henderson said.
“The Government is very confident that its amendments to the Fair Work Act will protect CFA volunteers and prevent similar union takeovers happening to other emergency services,” Michaelia Cash, Federal Minister for Employment said.
“It is essential that the 60,000 volunteers who keep Victoria safe are protected from a hostile union takeover driven by Bill Shorten and Daniel Andrews.”
“Bill Shorten now needs to front up and explain why Labor is standing with the UFU and abandoning volunteers,” Minister Cash said.
